This collection contains materials documenting the service of Charles Tayloe Mason in the Confederate Army Corps of Engineers. The correspondence, 1862-1865, of Mason and other military officials concerns the construction of fortifications and bridges on the James River, Va., and the use of slaves as laborers. Other items in the collection include accounts, muster rolls, orders, drawings of military structures and the fortifications at Drewry's Bluff, and military maps of Chesterfield and Fairfax counties, Va. Correspondents include James McHenry Howard (1839- 1916), Joseph Kirkwood Mitchell (1811-1889), and Walter Husted Stevens (1827-1867).
